The Basil Rathbone Library

Basil Rathbone reading a book I love to browse through used book stores, but sometimes there are so many books, and boxes and boxes of old magazines, that I feel overwhelmed. If I only knew specifically which issue of a particular magazine had an article about Basil Rathbone, I could ask the clerk to get that box down from the top shelf. So, in an attempt to solve my own problems, I began to organize a list of all the books and all the magazine articles that are about Rathbone. This is a "work in progress" as I continue to discover more sources of information and add them to the list. I welcome your suggestions of sources to be added, and your corrections, too. The Library consists of three sections:

Books and Magazine Articles are on separate pages. The list of Websites is directly below.

Websites

"The Great Baz," a blog about Basil Rathbone.

The Rathbone Register has a nice biography of Basil Rathbone, information on family, dates of marriages, births, and deaths.  It is an archive of information on the Rathbone family, would especially be interesting to genealogists, and those of you who are related to Basil Rathbone.

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is a tribute to their portrayals as the great detective and his biographer. This website has 54 of the Rathbone/Bruce radio episodes available for download (free) and to buy on CD. The site also has a synopsis of all 14 of the Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, together with pictures and information about each film.

"Rathbone's Finest Hour" -- an article written by Pat Ward, which appears on www.sherlock-holmes.com/featur4.htm . The article concerns the 1939 film "The Hound of the Baskervilles."

Sherlock Holmes

Everything the web offers about Sherlock Holmes is on Sherlockian.net.
Chris Redmond's extensive site includes a page about Holmes in movies, radio, stage and television, information on various actors who have played Holmes, and links to other pages that have information about Holmes on stage, film, radio and TV.

"Holmes on Screen" is an essay by Damian Magee that examines the popular Rathbone/Bruce series of Holmes movies.

John H. Watson's Web Blog! The Good Doctor himself writes about all things Sherlock. One of his entries, entitled "The Definitive Sherlock Holmes, has short descriptions of the 14 Rathbone/bruce films: http://www.johnhwatsonmd.com/sherlock-holmes-basil-rathbone/

There are far too many Sherlock Holmes sites to begin listing them all here. One might begin with two Sherlock Holmes web rings: "The Insidious Ring of Moriarty" and "Baker Street."
