Rathbone as the Marquis St. Evremond

This card depicting Rathbone as the Marquis St. Evremonde from "A Tale of Two Cities" is one of a set of 36 cards entitled "Characters Come to Life." The cards were printed by Godfrey Phillips Ltd. (UK) in 1938 and issued in cigarette packages. Each card measures approximately 2.2 x 2.5 in. (5.3 x 6 cm.). On the back of each card is a brief description of the film in which each star appears.

This card was issued in South Africa by A. & M. Wix in 1939. It is card number 96 from a set of 100 cards entitled "Film Favourites, 3rd series." The front of the card shows a photo of Basil Rathbone and Barbara O'Neil from "The Sun Never Sets." The back of the card has the card number, series title and brief biographies of Rathbone and O'Neil. The card was given as a free premium with the purchase of a pack of 10 cigarettes. The card measures approx. 1.5 x 2.75 in (3.5 x 6.5 cm.).

Rathbone

This card was issued in the United Kingdom by C. & T. Bridgewater Cookies Ltd. in 1939. It is card number 44 from a set of 48 cards entitled "Film Stars, 7th series." The front of the card shows a photograph of Basil Rathbone; the back of the card is blank. The card was given as a free premium with the purchase of a package of cookies. Size is approximately 1.5 x 2.8 inches (3.5 x 7 cm.).

The same picture appeared on a tobacco card issued by R.J. Lea Ltd. of Manchester, England (Tournament Cigarettes) in 1939. It is card number 7 of a series of 54 cards called "Famous Film Stars." The back of the card contains a brief biography of Rathbone. Same size as above.


A set of double-sided cards from the "Mr Cinema" collection, printed in France. The front of each card shows different photos from a film. On the back is technical information, cast, resume of the story and some facts concerning the making of the film. It measures 5.1 x 8 inches (13 x 20.5 cm). The text is in French. Rathbone films represented in the Mr. Cinema card series are "Son of Frankenstein," "David Copperfield," "Pontius Pilate" (above) and "International Lady," "Above Suspicion," "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and "Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon" (below).
